They were just fans that were at the game and were not stopped by security before they were able to get on the field and to Aaron.

A couple of idiots.

Tom House, a reliever for the Braves, caught the ball in the bullpen. Al Downing, who like Aaron, wore number 44, gave up the homerun. He later became somewhat of a country music star.
