My live-in boyfriend's 28 year old sister recently passed away throughout the night from leukemia. She was such a sweet girl. The viewing and funeral are coming around, and I've never been to any funeral before. I haven't experienced losing someone close yet. What is appropriate attire for these happenings? I don't want to offend the family and wear the wrong this. Is it true that I should wear black?

Oh. And should I do the same for the family memorial service today? Just making sure. There's a family service today, tomorrow for friends, Saturday she'll be buried. I am so sad, I can't even tell you. I know one thing I'll need is a whole lot of tissues because I am a cryer. ='(

Black is always appropriate, but if you don't have anything in black that is suitable for a funeral, a conservative, dark-colored suit or dress will be fine.

My condolences to your BF and his family.

Subdued colors - and TASTEFUL clothing!

I am a funeral director - and the outfits I see people coming to visitations and funerals in is nothing short of appalling!

Women in halter-tops and short-shorts, mini skirts that don't cover their behinds, sheer white tops with colored bras (or no bras at all)

Men in jean shorts, t-shirts and "Jesus" sandals, torn blue jeans.

Dress as if you were going to a job interview at a large company.

My condolences to you and your family. As for your question, black or a dark solid color is appropriate. Anything conservative is fine. Meaning you can wear a dress or a pant suit, so long as it is conservative. A veil is not neccessary but not inappropriate.

Dress formally. For women, this means a conservative skirt, blouse, and heels. For men, a coat and tie.

Conservative dark clothing. Nothing too short, revealing.

Not necessarily black, but a subdued color would work.
