Number 3 is for some a magic number. Lots of things come in threes: bad luck, buses, lions, wishes, blind mice, musketeers and porridge-eating bears.

And it's not just Goldilocks. Inspired by Aristotle, neo-classical playwrights subscribed to the three unities (place, time and action); many stories, especially fairy stories or folk tales, are in three parts, or have an element that is repeated three times - the same is true for powerful speeches and jokes (think Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman, or liberté, égalité and fraternité); and classical picture composition relies on its own rule of threes.

Three may seem to be a pleasing or natural number but unlike one, two, five or 10 it is not one that we can derive from our bodies. To have three eyes, or three legs, is unlikely; to have three fingers unfortunate.

But Earth is the third planet from the Sun, there are three primary colours and three dimensions to a solid object.

The number is also important in the Christian tradition: Christ represents one third of the trinity (the father, son and holy ghost), was visited by the three wise men and 33 years later - when Peter disowned him three times - rose on the third day after the crucifixion (he died at 3pm).

There were also 12 disciples, which is a multiple of three.

Three is a magic number,
Yes it is, it's a magic number.
Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity
You get three as a magic number.

The past and the present and the future.
Faith and Hope and Charity,
The heart and the brain and the body
Give you three as a magic number.

It takes three legs to make a tri-pod
Or to make a table stand.
It takes three wheels to make a ve-hicle
Called a tricycle.

Every triangle has three corners,
Every triangle has three sides,
No more, no less.
You don't have to guess.
When it's three you can see
It's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby,
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family,
And that's a magic number.

the Triple Goddess (Pagan)
the Triple God (Pagan)
the body, the mind and the soul (Pagan)
the father, the son and the holy ghost (Christian)
the Fates (Greek and Roman)
the Norns (Norse)

If you ask a thousand people to pick a number between 1 and 4, most of them will pick 3 simply because it is the strongest number, it has a bigger impact on thought and vision.

Three is considered a good number in Chinese culture because it sounds like the word "alive", compared to four that sounds like the word "death"
