During the summer months, there are more "tag, garage, or yard" sales than you can shake a stick at. A lot of them have wonderful furniture selling for practically nothing. You can negotiate and get them to come down even further most of the time. If you are in a big city, take a drive out to a suburb or look in local community papers and you will see loads of sales outside or in someones garage. This is the dirt cheap way of buying furniture. Someones trash, your treasure is the way to look at it, and remember, it isn't trash!

Look in the classified ad of your local newspaper under household furnishings. They have great buys on quality furniture. There's also the budget dept. in the furniture stores and you can also check out garage sales or thrift stores. Better yet, in the the better neighborhoods, you can find find dressers and tables among other things that people throw away.

Flea Markets, Farmers Markets, Garage Sales, Yard Sales, Estate Sales, Auctions (if you're *REALLY* lucky).

You can also swing by college/uni dorms at the end of semester and buy stuff from the students. Or, if you don't mind risking some ... adventures ... drive around late at night before the garbage man does his rounds and pick-up the furniture you find there.

Mind, you, the stuff you find waiting pick-up is not necessarily...sanitary, or even safe to use. But it's free...

Try Craigslist . There is even a section on Craigslist where everything is given away for free. Also, look in the newspaper for yard sales, estate sales, moving sales. Salvation Army and other thrift stores sell things cheaply. Look in the yellow pages for a list of thrift stores.

IKEA is good - we've bought a lot of things there. Have some fabulous bookcases, too.
If you sign up for their family member scheme, (you can do that there) you will be entitled to member's perks, like some discount offers on various things and free soft beverages in the cafe. It will also ensure that you receive the IKEA catalogues.

Try a U-do-it furniture shop, where you put the finish on it, yourself. The furniture is inexpensive, and you get a chance to check it for any problems. After you finish it, you have a one of a kind piece.

Register with re-cycle.co.uk. You can pick things up for free once you've registered. Also good for recycling your unwanted bits and pieces. Charity shops, supermarket notice boards or put a wanted items ad in your local paper/supermarket. Hope this helps.
