I drove the car around the city this afternoon and came back home. I had to head to the Uni in the evening and tried starting the car. It wouldn't budge. The horn, headlight and everything work fine. I even removed the battery and charged it completely, but it wouldn't start. I don't even hear the 'krrrrrr' it used to make everytime i started the car. Don't know what happened. It was working fine this morning. Please help!

i can hear the clicking sound when i turn the ignition on, but cannot hear the whirring sound after that. when i tried to get the car out of the house, i pushed it downhill and it started. i drove it around a couple of blocks and came back home and then charged the battery. the headlight, horn and blinkers all function at full intensity.
isnt there anyone i can fix this myself. don't have the $$$$ to spend.

If you are not hearing the whirring noise that happens when you first turn the key to the on position (that's the fuel pump priming the system), then you have a fuel issue. Either the pump has died or there is a relay blown.

Here is what to do. Take off your battery cables at the battery and clean the battery terminals and the cable ends. Reinstall them tightly. Charge your battery with a battery charger. Charge it for at least 8 hours. After that period, check the lights. They should be nice and bright. Turn them OFF. Read the voltage from ONE battery terminal to the other with a meter. It should read at LEAST 12 volts. You can expect about 12.6 or even 13 depending upon the condition of the battery if it is in good condition. Since your battery is only a year old, it is likely all right. Start the car. Now, with the car running, check the voltage across the battery terminals AGAIN. You should be getting 14 to 15 volts volts minimum while the alternator is working. If you are not getting at least 14volts, your alternator is likely NOT working. If you have a battery tester, you could also test the battery for the condition of the charge. Pop open the lids on the battery and test the acid. Suck some of the acid out with the tester and see what the tester tells you. Be CAREFUL, this is SULFURIC ACID and will burn you if you get it on your skin. Wear safety goggles and protect your eyes preferably also. If you get it on your skin, wash it off with LOTS of water immediately. The battery acid should be specific gravity 1.275 or HIGHER in ALL cells If you have one cell that is, for example, 1.100, your battery is toast. Replace it. If you cannot SEE any acid in the battery, top the battery up with distilled water and re-charge and re-test the battery. Batteries do not mind if you leave lights on and run them down to NOTHING, as long as you recharge them within a reasonable length of time. By the way, If you JUMP-START the vehicle with a HIGH_AMPERAGE charger repeatedly, you can damage the plates in the battery. If the battery has been frozen in an uncharged state, the battery is no good. Check to see if the sides of the battery are curved outwards. If they are, it has most likely been frozen at some point, so replace the battery. You said it "jumps but doesn't stay jumped" which suggests that your alternator is very likely not charging properly. Usually, even if your battery is dead, when a motor is jump-started, the car will stay running because the alternator provides adequate voltage to operate the engine IF the alternator is working properly. Check the tighness of the belt driving the alternator. See if it is slipping, or even MISSING entirely. Good luck with that. You can do this stuff..

Are the headlights dim? If so battery. If not check the battery cables for corrosion/tightness.. Check the cable going to the starter and make sure everything is attached to the starter. If wiring is fine then it sounds like a bad starter. Somethimes a starter can be pecked on with a small hammer to free it up.

By the way the "krrrrr" sound is when the starter is turning the flywheel to try to start the engine

If your battery is indeed fully charged first check all connections for tightness and corrosion. Then check the starter/starter selonoid. If you are not fimiliar with these parts, their locations and their function then you should consult a mechanic. Good luck!

Ok if the battery is fully charged and there is no clicking when you turn the key to the start position it is probably the ignition starter switch. If it does click but not turn the motor over it is either a bad wire or bad starter solenoid. If it turns over but is not starting you have to see if the engine is getting spark to the plugs. If it is then you have to see if it is getting fuel. If it is then you have to check for compression. If it has all of these the only thing left is to check the timing.Hope I have been helpful.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

Could be two things the starter or the alternator has gone out. Either one is very pricey

If there are no sounds at all when you turn the key, there is probably something wrong with the starter.

Find out what it is and repair it, then your car will start.

Might be your alternator. Or your starter. Get a jump.
