Manowar have actually gone louder than the Who. The loudest album ever is the Raw Power by The Stooges (the Iggy Pop remix). Loudness is not a good thing on records, it actually makes the music lack definition: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmex_4hreQ&mode=related&search=

According to Wikipedia... it was Manowar, they were in the Guinness book of world records as the loudest "musical performance". Now it's apparently a band called Gallow.

The Who clocked in as the loudest. Deep Purple was most consistantly loud.

The Who ... are officially the loudest band ever - Reaching that accolade during their 1980 concert at Charlton Athletics old ground (The Valley). ... I know that's where they still play now but it's a new stadium!

At one point, the Who was the loudest band. I think Iron Maiden was also a contender. I don't know about more recent bands.

yes, maybe the Who although Loop from the early eighties also v. loud. Burst Stephen Pastel's eardrum during one of their gigs in Glasgow.
