Hello,

My questions is in regards to a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction. I was thinking about pursuing a career in law enforcement but have discovered that having such a conviction prevents one from carrying a gun. What other job occupations are limtied with this conviction? Would becoming a school counselor/teacher be out as well? Thanks!

Yes, you may have problems getting a school counselor/teacher job with this background. In fact, you might not even be able to serve lunch at school or drive a school bus with that on your record. What you should do, is take some anger management courses or sensitivity training or something that will ameliorate this conviction. How long ago was this? At some point, people will say, "Okay. He was young and stupid then; but look what he's done since then!"

It is entirely possible that your conviction would preclude your pursuing a career in school counseling or teaching. It is the prerogative of an employer to refuse employment based upon the existence of such a conviction. The only requirement of employers in such a situation is that they treat all equally. In other words, they can't hire another with a similar conviction while denying you, assuming other issues are equal. To do so would risk violation of fair employment requirements.
