Have you ever seen a death certificate with the cause of death listed as smoking? Of course not. Non-smokers live on average 5 years longer than smokers, and they die of most of the same diseases as smokers do. The current anti-smoking fad is, for the most part based on dislike of the smell, and hysteria. Everyone knows that the tobacco companies lied about the dangers and addictiveness of nicotine, but exactly how were the studies done on second hand smoke? The only actual study that I have seen involved putting a lab rat in a glass box, and pumping it full of smoke 24/7 until the rat died several weeks later. Kind of like the "cancer causing coffee" back in the 70's when they were giving rats what would have amounted to a human drinking over 200 cups a day. I have a real problem with the government trying to control every aspect of our lives. If they make smoking illegal, they should also make any fattening foods illegal, and alcohol, and gambling any the list can go on and on. I guarantee that more people are killed every day by drunk drivers than are killed by smoking.

Why are they allowed to develop all kinds of weapons, from fire arms to nuclear missiles? Those kill too, don't they? And not only do they kill, billions are spent on them while other more important issues such as hunger and poverty are hardly addressed.

I'm not saying I agree with the selling of cigarettes. I hate being around smokers and it especially upsets me when people are stupid enough to smoke around children. Guess they never heard of passive smoking and of the lung cancer statistics directly related to it.

I gave the first example simply because it's appalling to see just how many cases there are of harmful products being produced and sold and all in the name of the almighty capital. Screw conscience, screw principles, ethics, morals, all of that. The only thing they really care about is money and the power it gives.

On the other hand, in the case of cigarettes, I don't think they should be prohibited. People should be responsible for making their own choice not to smoke. Or else we will never be ready for true freedom, because it implies a sense of responsibility to keep it. I think there should be more effective campaigning and raising of the population's awareness about it. You may think there's a lot of it already, but it consistently fails. Youngsters still pick up smoking because it still passes an image of "coolness" and society in general constantly promotes that "coolness" in detriment of values, ethics and principles. Smokers need to be confronted in a harsher way with reality, we should call to their attention about all the negative consequences of smoking and the non-existence of anything positive about it. And kids need to be taught how to stand against peer pressure, how to value themselves and their health (and the health of the population in general) above whatever group, they need to know they don't need to belong in whatever's wrong.

Money.

Cigarettes have 62 cancer causing chemicals in them.

what do you think the chances are of me being allowed to sell food with that potential ?? None.

Its just down to money and the vote.

sbyldy: My dad died of lung cancer thru smoking and my mum has it thru secondary smoking from him. Next time i visit his grave i'll tell him its all just a fad and he wasn't really ill. Maybe i should kick his grave for being such a lazy time-waster for lying there, what do you think ? I'll also give my mum a big kick up the arse from you for pretending she is ill shall i ?
