Heres how there math works.
Francis is on 68% of a cap. LaFrentz is on 51.5. Both their contracts are gone as of next year.
Miles is on 34, Przybilla 23.9, they have 2 and 3 years respectivly.
Their young guys are Oden 19%, Aldridge 17%, Webser 12, Roy 12, Frye 10, Jack 5, Koponen 4, Rodriguez 4.
At the end of this year they have to decide on Jack, Fry and Webster but they can extend their contracts for a season at a minimal increase.
They will have a huge amount of cap flexibility over the next couple of seasons and with Oden, Aldridge, Roy etc as young pieces they should be able to attract a great free agent or two with that money.
Paul Allen is one of the richest men on earth and paying out Francis isn't a problem. Hell they may pay out Miles and Pryz too if they cant trade them.
The Blazers are looking at making a serious run for the title in two years and they have in the space of two years they have remade their side to give themselves that opportunity.
The Knicks were the lucky beneficieries of the trade to free up Randolph's money and the Blazers efforts to get a 4/5 man to fit in their Aldridge/Oden rotation. Frye is the perfect guy for that and he's the kind of guy who will accept that role to win titles.

Listen folks. In the NBA, you HAVE to match salary for salary to make a trade. Zach Randolph makes (x) and the rest of the players in the trade made (y), the Knicks HAD to match (x+y) to make the trade. They don't want Francis and didn't want him from the beginning. The Blazers are trying to change their image completely from the JailBlazers back to something positive for the Portland community. Randolph, though a good player, sucks as a community member. The Blazers didn't want Randolph anyway near Oden to corrupt him. So they made this deal. I hope that Randolph scores more on the court than making it rain off the court. New York City is not Portland, OR and if Randolph could not keep it together in Portland, what is he going to do in NEW YORK.

I think all they were concerned about was clearing some cap space on their roster, and as soon as Jamaal Magloire is shipped out, they'll have cleared something like $25 million off the books between him and Zach Randolph. They already have Jarret Jack and point guard and drafted Taurean Green in the 2nd round, so Francis was expendable and probably didn't fit in with their future plans.

what they really wanted was to free up the salary cap so they can keep those young players they are developing. they really wanted Frye though. they dont want other high priced players, they have equally good young and relatively cheap players. why would they trade Randolph to some equally high priced player tht they wouldnt want to keep in the first place? Francis was there just to even up the salaries.

they did that trade for the development of their young core.. randolph was traded so that lamarcus aldridge can play the 4 alongside greg oden.. and they're goin to buy out the contract of steve francis for salrary cap reasons and the development of their young guards (jarret jack, sergio rodriguez and rudy fernandez)

No it just tells you how bad of an influence Randolph is if they are willing to let him go for nothing. The team will have way better chemistry than it would have had with him.

if you take a look at the history of the franchise...Portland has not exactly had a good track record when it comes to wheeling and dealing. they got lucky in the 70's when they beat Dr J's 76ers, and they haven't done anything since (besides blow a 20 pt lead to an eventual champion Laker team).
the only thing i see them attempting to do is have future money to pay Greg Oden. other than that, they're not doing much more than taking aim at their own foot.

I would hope they have something up their sleeves, or else the GM needs to be fired.
