The task is very difficult. In Australia you have more familiar conditions, less fatigue and arguarbly less difficult opposition, but I do feel that if England play to there strengths then they can make a mark in this test series. The bowling doesn't worry me. Anderson, Broad, Finn (or Bresnan) and Swann are a tried and tested combination who have won multiple matches all around the world. In fact when England played Pakistan at the start of this year, which was played in similar conditions. It was the bowlers who constantly kept England in a fighting position although ultimately it ended up in defeat anyway. If you look at the stats from that series, they are quite interesting and show England's bowling strength. These facts give you certain things to consider. One being that the Indian batting line-up is considerably stronger than Pakistan's, however on the contrary the pitches in UAE are some of the flattest and slowest tracks you'll find in the world. Looking at the stats, Pakistan only managed to score over 300 twice from 5 innings and were bowled out for less than 200 twice too, that is extroadinary considering how flat the pitches and how unfamiliar the conditions were. Prior mentions The Ashes in 2010/11, the key to winning that series was making huge totals. Without having the time to look at the official stats, from memory each England batsmen (besides Collingwood) made a ton in the series. Cook and Trott made multiple considerable scores in the series, allowing England's innings to start with some stability. This is a key component to winning in the sub-continent, teams need to score over 400 in the first innings to pile the pressure on to the opposition, England know they have match winning seamers and a very capable spinnner, but unlike the UAE tour the batsmen have to deliver. English batsmen like pace on the ball its a proven fact. Most English batsmen tend to be stronger on the back foot, how often for example, do you see Alastair Cook cut the ball in an innings (all the time!) The problem with this is however, that when England play in the sub-continent where the pitches are slow and favour spin bowling they struggle. Quick feet and quick minds are required, the English need to be pro-active and not neccesarily attack every ball delivered, but always have a thought of how and where they are going to score the runs. So England's batsmen have a big job to do, India are favourites but England can be competitive if they are pro-active and use there brains. EDIT: I slightly edited the answer as I was in a rush this afternoon when I wrote it.

Considering the current test form of England Team and also taking i9nto consideration the home advantage, England can defenitely beat India in the test series. However,, in ODI series, India hold the advantage.

England has the capacity to win games at present, as we saw that in previous tour against Westindies . But England is facing a different situation they are going to play against an Emotional Team, which can destroy the pace attack of any team if it wills. As we saw this in India and SouthAfrica series which took place in Ireland. So both have the power to dominate each other...But
who will is to be decided on the basis of "TOSS", "CONFIDENCE","WEATHER","FITNESS" "FORM", so these factors play cruicial part in Beating the opponents.
So, the answer for your question can be given by three ways
1) England can beat India if it strong in its confidence meter
2) England should display Good batting display against India, which seems to be low in england side
3) So, India is quiet strong in Batting line up so it is important for England to have a good Pace attack, and spin attacks.
So, if these 3 satisified, England would surely beat India.

Actually, India has to WIN because ENGLAND team is not so confident that they will win the GAME...
In England team, Flintoff is not there....... he his a good bowler and as well as a batter.
There is a chance for England to WIN the test series also because it is there home town and Michal vaghan is playing....

India could win. Pitersen is not really in form. Flintoff is not playin. Vaughn is not in form. So there is a very little hope for England.
