I am 53 and I've worked with both disabled persons as well as temporarily able bodied persons.

I didn't choose to work with disabled persons , they were already there when I started working at this non profit agency.

Interestingly Ontario 's new lieutenant governor is a former city tv /cp24 anchor , David Onley who uses a motorized scooter due to the effects of Polio.

Disabled persons are not always in 'workshops' with low wages, disabled people can work just about anywhere and do just about anything we'd like if given the opportunity by employers.

My hero when young was Helen Keller, she said between deaf and blind, that deafness was the worst. I learned the manual alphabet, and didn't know anything more. When I was 18 I saw Sign Language for the first time. It was the most incredibly beautiful and expressive Language I had ever seen, I was crazy for it, love at first sight. I was already in college without a major. So I majored in Interpreting for the deaf. It was unbelievably easy for me to learn, like I was being reminded of something. What I didn't know was that I could not be an interpreter for several reasons. So I am not in the field, except for being disabled myself. :>o

may Peace be with you.

btw: deafness is not a disability when with others who know your language, just like any person surrounded by folks ignorant of your language.

Grew up with a Disabled Cousin, kids of family friends and work experience.

Working with people with disability is similar to another job. To work with Disabled People needs a skill to put yourself in another person's shoes. If you can wear a eye patch(to blind both your eyes), and think how you feel, and if you can put yoruself in wheelchair, and operate and feel how a wheelchair person feels and thinks.

The people with Disabilities have taught me courage, faith, persistence, to shrug off tests, difficulties, etc which comes in their way, etc. They have a big smile, and they are a big sign of love, and encouragement.

Since the time of slavery, Disabled people were treated like slaves. It is so beautiful to see from the American with Disabilities Act(ADA) Act which was a part of the civil rights movement. In developing countries, which considered disability as God's curse, with the advent of science alot of kids are taken care of. They are given treatment and given opportunity to enjoy the amenities as every kid in the world enjoys. It is wonderful to see the reformations and additions to the ADA act which was signed in 1990 by the former president too.

Let there be equality and Unity among everyone.
