Ok so this is a math problem. I think I did it completely wrong. So can you please help me by showing me how to do it step by step? Here's the problem....

Determine the better buy by comparing the unit cost of each purchase: 128 megabytes of memory for $26.00
OR
512 megabytes of memory for $110.00?

OK...

They want unit cost, or cost per unit. In this case, the unit seems to be megabytes.

So, take each one and figure the cost per megabyte.

128/26 = ~4.92 per/mb

512/110 = ~4.65 per/mb

So, based on unit price, the best buy would be the 512.

Hope this helps!

512 megabytes cost 110.00

Cost of each megabyte = 110 / 512 = 0.2148

Cost of 128 megabyte chip = 26.00

Unit cost of megabyte = 26 / 128 = 0.2031

The unit cost of the 26 dollar RAM (128 megabyte) is less than that of 512 megabytes. So, 4 pieces of 128 megabyte chips will cost less than 1 512 megabyte memory chip.

In practice, you may be better off buying the higher capacity chips even if they cost a little more, due to some other factors.

better buy is if you get more memory for the same amount of cash so:

128 Mb at $26.00
= 128 Mb / $26.00
= 4.923 Mb per $

512 Mb at $110
= 512 Mb / $110.00
= 4.655 Mb per $

so you're better off buying 128 Mb at $26.00

Determine how many megabytes per dollar each one costs for example 128 divided by 26 equals so and so dollars, repeat, the highest number of megabytes per dollar wins.

well basically its asking you to find out what is the cheapest way to get 512 mb of memory. either in the form of one 512mb card or 4 128mb cards (4x128 = 512).
this is how it is done...

because 512 is 4x128 you need to multiply the price of the 128mb card by for to get the price of buying the four cards to equal 512mb. so that would be $26 x 4. which equals $104.

now you compare this new price to the single 512mb card price.

you will find that the 512mb card price at $110 is greater than the price of buying 4 128mb cards to get 512mb of memory which is only $104.

Therefore the 128mb memory is a better buy.

you can also work this out a different way by dividing the price of $110 by 4 to find that it equals &27.50. which is more expensive than $26 128mb memory.
