I don't know if there is a "best' film about Viet Nam, because it's not a particularly great subject. "Good Morning Viet Nam"
is worth consideration. There are others. But Deer Hunter has a special place. It tells the story of us small town folks who lost our special friends in a way that we will never understand. Physically. Emotionally. Religiously. Our friends, family and colleagues died a death that we will never understand. Even if they are living today.

This is a very great and yet disturbing question. We were all so young. The world was our oyster. But for many of us, it would never come to fruition.

EDIT: For Ziggyman

I'm tired of hearing responses about what Americans should or should not know or not know. I was seventeen when a number of my friends died in Viet Nam. Good friends. Guys I grew up with. Guys I respected like an older brother. Guys I loved. I'm so tired of people like you politicizing what I'm "supposed" to feel as an American. I am as American as you can get. I suffer every day because of the people I've lost in Viet Nam and now in Iraq. I am not some abstract. My friend who lost his young brother in Iraq is not abstract either. Americans are people who have hearts, souls and minds. We are not to be pigeonholed by people who do not understand who we are. The stereotype is not appreciated. Especially when our flesh and blood is the subject.

should Americans learn from it's depiction of the futility of war?

No, its a depiction, in your own words you killed the question.

It really is one of the best films ever made - Nam or otherwise. War means money. Greed means more wars.

Yes I agree. It is kind of odd that they are Americans-Russians. I own the Deer Hunter on HD-DVD.
