I heard that there's this purple paint or something like that that is used to detect thrush on nipples or mouth. What exactly is it and how is it used?

It's called Gentian Violet and it doesn't detect it, it treats it. I've never tried it but some women swear by it. Check it out:

If your baby has thrush you'll see white patches on their tongue or inside of the mouth that you can't wipe off. If you have it on your nipples, they'll be red, sore, itchy. Check with your doctor, because there is also medication you can have prescribed, both for you and the baby.

Probably Gentian violet. It is not a paint but a chemical dye that is harmless to humans.
