A car traveling at 60km/hr overtakes another car traveling at 42km/hr. Assuming each car to be 5m long, find the time taken during the overtake and the total road distance used for the overtake.

No they don't leave the same place a t the same time. If this were true then body with high speed would have already been in the front.

assuming both cars travel at constant speed...

and the "overtake time":
STARTS at the point where the FRONT OF FAST CAR is in-line with REAR OF SLOW CAR, and
ENDS when the REAR OF FAST CAR is IN LINE WITH FRONT OF SLOW CAR....
then....

During the overtake, FAST CAR travels 10 meters more than SLOW CAR....
Convert 60 km/hr and 42 km/hr to m/s

during the same time:
d,fast = (v,fast)*t = d,slow + 10 m
d,slow = (v,slow)*t
d,fast-d,slow = 10 meters = (v,fast-v,slow)t
solve for t (seconds)

the road distance is how far FAST CAR travels, d,fast.

Look at it this way:

The relative speed of the 2 cars is 60 - 42 = 18 km/hr

18km/hr = 18000m in 60 mins

= 300m per min

= 5m per second

Since, in the overtake, the faster car has to travel a total distance of 10m, the question resolves itself into " how long does it take to travel 10m at 5m/sec " so the overtake takes 2 seconds. Hope this helps, Twiggy.
