Get involved in things you enjoy and open yourself up to talking to other people who are doing the same things. Most of my good friends in school were other orchestra people. You also need to give yourself time to meet people. Commuter students often have trouble finding friends because they run off campus the minute their classes are over, thinking they can study better at home. That may be true, but you really can't meet people during class, so it is those times before and after class that makes it possible to make friends. Also, as much as people complain about group projects (and I agree that the bad groups are horrible), I have a lot of students who have told me that they met their best friends working with them on group projects.
