I think it allows passengers to get in an out safely ,away from
traffic. Since the steering wheels are on the other side of the car,they drive on the other side of the road.

It's arbitrary. This is one of those rules whose importance lies in universal compliance more than the details of the rule itself. I.e., it doesn't matter what side of the road we drive on so long as everyone in the country drives on the same side. One could just as easily ask why Canadians drive on the right side of the road.

I lived in Japan for 6 years, and I found that driving on the left was easier to transition to. When I moved back to the US, relearning how to drive on the right was very difficult. I would have to say I prefer driving on the left.
