An American citizen with a valid passport will get an on-arrival visa at the Dubai airport which is valid for 30 days. There is no need for you to obtain visa prior to your travel.

Yes, but they will stamp your passport at the airport when you land, and there is no Visa Charge like insome countries. There is however a 30 Dirham exit visa charge, that gets included in your plane ticket. You only get charged that if you leave the UAE by car.
A "Tourist Visa" says it is good for 30 days, but you will have to renew after 60 days... Don't know why, but that is the way it works.

No visa needed. But the wisest thing to do is call the airline you're flying into Dubai and confirm it with them.
