She meets a childhood lover after years of the pain she had to go through without him being there. I imagine that the guy left her when they were just kids.
Now, in the present, the guy wants to get back with Fergie again, but Fergie points out that if they wanted to build a new relationship, it would turn out like their childhood one and it'll just crash and burn, and she doesn't want to go through the pain again. So she's being a big girl this time by not getting what she wants, and leaving the guy to move on with her life. The parts where it repeats "Don't cry" shows that Fergie's trying to tell herself that she can't go back with her past lover, even it would hurt for the moment.

Check out the lyrics--HE breaks up with HER, thinking that she'll make a fuss, but she doesn't (because she's trying to be a big girl), and they break up. The second verse is him saying--oh, gee, I'm an idiot, I better go back to her. And then her mom tells him that she really WAS crying, so he's saying, big girls don't cry, huh?
And that's about it. Silly (or stupid?) boys. :)

she probably realized that the relationship wasnt right for her... maybe she needed to find herself.
