Quite potentially yes. this would all of course be contigent upon local and state laws and if you were under a contract with language addressing such issues.

I worked for an insurance company and got in one accident with a company vehicle that wasnt my fault.
A few weeks later I was out sick and another guy filled in on my job for me and he wrecked the vehicle. The CEO thought it was the same person and was going to have me fired until they found out it wasnt me. (of course the other guys accident was that he ran into a guard rail while looking at women ,... right in front of the company building hehe ;P )

It really depends on the state you live in. For example, in Washington there is no obligation of employment. This means you can be fired even if there is no reason. If the boss doesn't like the way your hair is parted on that day...your gone. On the flip side you can quit whenever you want without a requirement to give notice.

Another factor is whether or not you belong to a union. If so there may be rules in the union contract with your employer that protect you from being fired in this case.

In my opinion you can especially if your boss is trying to replace you otherwise you should not be terminated.

I wish you the best.
