Clicking on Start, then Turn Off Computer will do the trick. Then you can select your shutdown options (restart or shutdown). If you can't get it to shut down that way then you could press the reset button on your computer if you have one, or you can press and hold the power button for four seconds or more to turn the computer off. Pressing the power button again will turn it back on. In general, pressing the reset button or power button is a last resort option, 'cause it may damage data on the hard drive.

The best way to restart is to shut down and restart. When you click on Start you will find the options to shut down, restart and log off. Choose shut down and after the system shuts down, press the start button (Physical) again. Or press the reset button which is below the main power button.

Find and click these in order:
Start, Shut Down, Restart, OK
Pressing the button on the front of your computer is like hitting a human with an anvil to put them to sleep. To say the least... it's rude.
I hope this helps!

If you have a brand name computer, check the manual for something called system recovery. It will bring it back to its factory state. I know they use it in HPs and Compaqs, but I have never tried it on any other make.
