For me, it depends on the quality of the potatoes/breading, and the shortening it's deep-fried in. The fresher the shortening, the better. When the shortening is dark and full of crunchies, it's repulsive. The less salt, the better, but no salt at all makes them terribly bland.
I like both onions and french fries the same (preferring thick fries with the skins on, or curly fries) without BBQ sauce . Otherwise, I'm not picky.
