i was caught by "loss prevention" shoplifting, and they didn't press charges, but put my name and information in a database.

Do i have to tell a future employer that i shoplifted? because if they didn't press charges then its not on my record

and someone told me because it was at macy's, the database that they put me in was just for them, so if i shoplifted there again id get in a lot of trouble. Is that true?

It wont be on a criminal record unless you were convicted. And most applications I have seen ask about crimes you were convicted of. So I would'nt mention it. But dont steal :)

I would say no. If they didn't press charges, you're not legally guilty. The database is most likely their store only. If the store finds out you could deny it and ask for their source and their proof. Then if Macy's didn't take your picture, I would claim identity theft. Or say they wrongly accused you which is why you didn't get prosecuted and you didn't have the money to hire a lawyer to sue them. I wouldn't steal from your new job though. Karma will get you.

Yes, Macy's will keep it in their record, so if you shoplift there again (or at any store that they might be sharing info with), you'll be screwed. But if you never heard from the police, then odds are they haven't reported it to law enforcement so you don't need to mention it.
