The bottom end is everything below the head(s), block crank, cam(but could be part of top end on overhead cam), pistons, rings bearings. Usually the bottom end is called a short block. a complete engine is called a long block

The top end of an engine is your pistons, rings, head gaskets, heads, and valve train. The bottom end is considered your crank bearings, crank shaft, rod bearings, cam bearings, etc.
If they are rebuilding the top end of your engine and not the bottom end, it will put stress on the bearing surfaces of your engine. Possibly causing premature bearing failure.
Budget is almost always the cause of doing "half" a rebuild. If budget is not a major concern, I would strongly reccomend rebuilding the entire engine.

Was it overheating before you had the heads done? IF NOT - I have seen guys put the head gaskets in backwards... which will cause the coolant passages to be blocked because the holes only line up one way. IF IT WAS - Here is a list of possible reasons Water Pump bad Thermostat defective Fan inoperative (electric) Fan clutch worn (Viscous) Loose belts Low coolant levels Restricted radiator Radiator core worn (Fins rotted out) Air flow blockage - through radiator (debris in front of rad between radiator and the a/c condenser) Coolant passages in block restricted Good Luck!

Hi, the top end is everything from the cylinder heads, up... including the intake manifold & fuel injection system... when he was telling you that you needed the top end rebuilt, he was probably referring to replacing the head gaskets & resurfacing the head(s) sometimes, but not usually, this can include resurfacing the valves & cutting the valve seats...

The top end is the heads and everything connected to the heads. valves, springs, push rods, cam, valve seats, etc.
The lower end is the crankshaft and pistons, and the engine block.

the top-end is the heads. they take the heads off and replace the camshafts, valves, valve guides and resurface the head if needed.
