supposedly the trojans were a kingdom who bred horses, and saw what the greeks left as a trophy
to this day I don't think that such an event actually ever happened, it was probably more of a lesson to those who would let their guards down when it came to dealing with their enemy

When Greeks gave the Trojan Horse, it was the 10nth year of the war. Hector from Trojans and Achilles from Greeks were dead (the most powerful heroes of each side), both Greeks and Trojans have dead soldiers from the battles. Trojans wanted the end of this war and with this gift believed that Greeks wanted the same thing. So Greeks tricked them.
As Laocoon (the priest who didn't believe the good willing of Greeks and warned the Trojans) said :
"Φοβού τους Δαναούς, και δώρα φέροντες" !
"Beware of Greeks bearing gifts " !

I was a gift/symbol of victory to the Trojans from the Greeks. They took the horse inside with only a few people inside of it. The Trojans celebrated and basically all got drunk and passed out. The men climbed out of the horse and opened the fortress gates and let the Greek army inside.

It probably wasn't that big. Maybe large enough for one man. The one man gets out opens the city gates and the greek army comes inside and wins. The horse could also have been a representation of the Trojan god. in those days it was common that when you lost a war you paid tribute to the god of the winners.

It s interesting to see so many confident responses and most are thoroughly contradictory on a subject with no definitive answers to the question. It s speculative but incredibly interesting, though. I guess one would ask, if a huge majestic horse were left for your kingdom (As tribute or offering or whatever), would you burn it in spite? Leave it where it lay? Or take it into the kingdom walls..? Well, we know what the Trojans did, unfortunately..

Well, it was considered a gift, and artwork was BIG back then. And just think. A huge, wooden horse. That's art to them! So, out of curiosity, they take it of course!
