Can anyone explain ratios to me? everytime I think I have grasped the concept, I get to another one that I cannot figure out....the current one that has me confused is 2.5:6::10:x
I know I am probably making it harder than it is, but I just do not get it.

in the example 2.5:6 ::10:x, you multiply the first number in the first ratio by 4 to get the second.
(2.5(4)=10)

so you should also do the same with the second number in the first ratio (6(4) = x)

so x = 24.

first try writing it differently, more like a fraction
2.5:6::10:x becomes 2.5/6 = 10/x
ratios are very similar to fractions in the fact that they represent similar comparisons. 8/10 is = to 4/5

there is a trick to doing ratios: cross multiplying
2.5/6 = 10/x
2.5 * x = 6 * 10
2.5x = 60
solve for x
x = 24

a:b::c:x
x = (b*c)/a

a:b::x:d
x = (a*d)/b

you take 10 divided by 2.5 and that gives you 4 and then multiply 4 times 6
x=24

Write them as fractions!

2.5 10
---- = ----
6 x

Cross-multiply to solve for x, or

2.5 x = 60, so

x=60/2.5, do the rest.

Think of the double colon ( :: ) as an equal sign and a single colon ( : ) as a fraction's bar. So, 1:2 :: 3 : x can be written as a fraction as 1/2 = 3/x.

you can use a method that turns them into fractions kinda
example
2.5:6 - 10:x

2.5/6 = 10/x

therefore

2.5 x = 10x6

therefore x = 60/2.5

which equals 24

ok... to make it easy unlike everyone else... just divide you first two numbers (2.5:6) so 6 divided by 2.5 is 2.4 ... so then multiply 2.4 by ten and then that is your answer (24)
