Agree. - I just did that (defend thing) a couple questions ago to some jerk stereotyping us. America isn't perfect, but we sure are great! Political parties aside.

It's sad, but for some reason there are many Americans who do hate their own country. We are a democratic nation, that means that not everyone is going to be happy with every thing that goes on in the government all the time. At least we know it was voted on democratically. We are able to vote, we are able to protest peacefully, we are able to speak our minds through media and internet, and any other medium we find, and we are able to email, snail mail, call, and otherwise harrass the heck out of any and all political figures as much as we please when we want something done a certain way. Things like this would get us killed or at least imprisoned in countries like Afghanistan. The someone's you refer to (and I assume we are not talking about fellow Americans here), probably love it and are having a great laugh over how much (some) Americans can be America's own worst enemy, and can slander America worse than even the terrorists do.

If someone says something nasty and untrue, we as a country should not worry about it. Other countries like France have said some bad things about us. That shouldn't mean we should defend ourselves in a war. Now if France attacked or declared war against us, that would be a different story.

We were united after what happened on 9/11, but unfortunately the current administration used it to attack another country. If we want to be united, we need to stop with the political garbage.

...and I agree. We should unite to beat the hell out of john b and his stupidity...

"Why can't we all just get along?"
-Rodney King

Judging by several of these answers, it appears that some American hate other Americans.

It's too bad; there are so many wonderful places and things to do in this country, as well as the ability to freely travel and relocate your domicile.

There are so many rights we do have in this country; it's too bad that some people live their lives dwelling on the negative.

To answer your question, I am optimistic in believing that most people will put aside their petty prejudices and complaints, and defend our country against slander and abusive statements made by others.

I agree. I am a Liberal Democrat who thinks this is the greatest country ever. I fly my flag proudly while I embrace all that America stands for. To me that includes freedom of speech, appreciation of all cultures, religious freedom, and the right to protest to right perceived wrongs. See, there isn't that much difference between us after all. We just view some things differently.

As a republican I would agree to defend America in any case. I could only hope that democrats would too, but I see from many of the answers you are getting that they would not. I'm sorry to hear that.

Yes I think most would agree with that. I do and I appreciate your comments about Americans on a question you answered.

I think so, but I think we should all be agreeing on more than that, too.

We could all stick up for ourselves as a country if we'd stop freaking out over everything at each other...

Of course.
Democrat or Republican - or Independent, Green, or what ever - we're still first and foremost Americans, even if I slam the Democrats for some of their brain dead ideals, I would still defend to the death their right to spew fourth their opinions - even though they're wrong most of the time.
