NBA: Men
Has been around for almost 50 years. Has the highest salary levels in American Sports. A billion dollar a year industry.
WNBA: Women
Has been around only 11 years. Very low starting salary of $35,000, max salary of $93,000. Does not earn a profit, due to low ticket sales and lack of sponsorship.
Similarities:
24 second shotclock, team roster of 12 or 13. College draft system. Free agent system. Many WNBA teams are also owned by NBA franchises... Seattle Storm/Supersonics...New York Liberty/Knicks...Indiana Fever/Pacers...Phoenix Mercury/Suns...Houston Comets/Rockets... San Antonio Silver Stars/Spurs...Detroit Shock/Pistons.
Differences:
NBA has 32 teams. WNBA only has 13 teams. NBA more financially stable and profitable. NBA plays a game of four 12 minute quarters. WNBA plays four 10 minute quarters.
NBA male players are taller and muscular. WNBA female players are smaller and shorter.

1) One difference is that an older brother has asked me never to mention the WNBA to him again either in e-mail or in person. I guess he does not acknowledge the existence of the WNBA.
2) Because of the low crowd attendance and the desire of the WNBA referees to improve their basketball calls during a game, the desire because the want to make it to the NBA, if you yell at a WNBA ref when they make a mistake or keep repeating the same mistakes, then, the WNBA referee will quickly correct his/her mistakes and start making the proper calls. In the NBA a ref will make whichever call he/she wants without any attempt to improve the quality of their calls. I read in a June, 2007 interview that the 96 year old "Wizard of Westwood" with 11 NCAA championship titles to his name (1 as a player and 10 as a coach) that he does not like the NBA as much as NCAA basketball because of the "showboating" the NBA players do and because the officials in the NBA constantly make the wrong calls and go against the rule books of the NBA and of basketball. Amazing in that the most successful NCAA head basketball coach ever is the only noted basketball figure, other than a former or current player in the NBA, who is highly critical of the officiating in the NBA as being constantly wrong and against the rule book. This is a true statement; however, NBA refs for as bad as they are are about 100 times better than the average college basketball referee, or, maybe about a thousand times better than the average college basketball referee.
3) It seems the free throw shooting in the WNBA as a general rule is better than the free throw shooting in the NBA.
The other differences are obvious, or, at least mentioned previously.

the wnba is more about team play...not taking ur guy 1 on 1...it's kinda like watching the spurs...there are stars but they're not really egotsical...im pretty sure its a testosterone thing...the players are more fundementally sound...the wnba has no players straight out of high school which is a good thing...
oh and some teams in the same cities have names that are linked...
sacramento kings/monarch
pheonix suns/mecury
minnisota twolves/lynx
washington wizards/mystics
houston rockets/comets
detroit pistons/shock
