What do these pop-ups look like.
In Windows XP, the update notification is a little yellow colored shield in your bottom toolbar right hand side.
If you are not sure or you think it may be spyware, I would avail myself of the free trials of some really good anti-spyware programs such as CounterSpy. It is far more powerful than any free software out there.
Try their free 15 day trial of the full system and see what it picks up.
It cannot hurt to try and unlike anti-virus programs, you can run more than one anti-spyware program on your computer.

Well, Microsoft does release security patches and updates every month, typically on the second Tuesday. And today they did release another batch.

If your computer is set up to automatically download Microsoft updates (and it should be), with you controlling the installation, then you should expect to see those reminders. (And Microsoft does rarely release patches or updates off schedule.)

If you are concerned about it, then do a manual update (click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Update) and download and install what you need.
