A bath may not be the answer, nor is brushing them. You need to find out "why" they have an unpleasant odor. You didn't specify a particular pet/animal. I am not going to "guess", as that can cause more problems than we care to discuss. I am sure this isn't the type of answer you wanted to hear, but it is the truth.

The best solution (but not the cheapest) for getting rid of odors is an ozone generating air purifier. One can purify the air in a whole house, but they cost a few hundred dollars. They are also great for allergy sufferers.
However, maybe you are looking for something less drastic. If you have small caged pets, then get the special bedding that absorbs odors. Mice are particularly stinky, that's just how they are. Rats and hamsters not so much. But you need to change the bedding regularly. Cleaning with cheap vinegar helps neutralize the urine odor, and kills germs, but rinse with water afterward.
With cats, I prefer the "crystal" or "pearl" litter, as it really absorbs the odor and lasts a long time.
With any animal that pees the carpet or furniture, white vinegar helps but you have to rinse afterward. Or you can dilute it with water so it hardly smells; it still is pretty helpfu. More expensive but better are the commercial products featuring natural enzymes to break down the smelly molecules.

Most pet stores sell products that break down the enzymes in urine (which is what makes it stink). Also I use ZeroOdor (registered trademark). I got it online and it works very well too.

Brush them daily, give them a bath, or take them to a groomer. There are pet shampoos out there for a reason.

Febrese works on more than fabrics and other things. A few good shots, and company is coming.
