I have a 4-cylinder Neon and a 6-cylinder Pathfinder, and for the record they both go about the same distance on a tank of gas but the Pathfinder cost around $25 more to fill than the Neon. Needless to say for long trips we take the Neon. =)

The size of the engine depends on the intended use of the vehicle. 4 cylinder engine vehicles are intended for fuel economy. But the better fuel economy comes with less power and performance. 8 cylinder engines are intended for power. They are good for towing, hauling heavy loads, and high performance applications. But with this extra power you have less fuel economy. In general, the more power an engine makes, the more fuel it will use to make this power. A 6 cylinder is somewhat of a compromise. It will have more power than a 4 cylinder, but less than a V8. But the fuel economy will be better than a V8 and less than a 4 cylinder. So your engine choice should depend on your needs. If you will not be hauling heavy loads, doing any towing, you want decent fuel economy, and don't have a lead foot, you should do well with a 4 cylinder. If you feel you will be dissatisfied with the performance of a 4 cylinder, step up to a V6. If you intend to do any amount of hauling, towing, or like lots of power, get a V8,, but be prepared to buy more gas.

I drive a straight 6, 4L ED ford. I always wanted a fat V8 but with the way fuel prices keep going up I think that dream may have to go on the back burner for a while. What do you drive? If you drive that is.

I have 2 V8's. a 5.4L & 5.7L - I love them.
The 5.4L is a for Triton in a lincoln navigator, and the 5.7L is in a Grand Cherokee. They both average about 10-12 mpg, which really sucks, but my license is suspended so I don't drive much anyway. I did average 22mpg in the jeep driving from chicago to nj. jeep claims that 2 of the cylinders shut down, but I seriously doubt it.
