In this dark comedy, if you call it that, there are several operatic arias in the background. Do they play any significant role, such as foreshadowing what is to come?

The haunting recording used several times in the soundtrack, including over the opening and closing credits, is the Enrico Caruso 78 rpm of "Una furtiva lagrima" ("A furtive tear"), from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "L'Elisir d'Amore" ("The Elixir of Love").

Woody Allen directed it? Hmm... I think maybe that's why it put me off. Well, it was a strange movie to begin with, and I'm not really a fan of opera, so I really didn't pay much attention. There was a lot of building in the music as Jonathan Rhys Meyers's character prepared to kill Scarlett Johansson's character. Other than that, I really didn't notice, although it was a few months ago I saw it.

They were selections from various operas. See http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0416320/soundtrack
