That is exactly it. Goldfish have quite good memories. When they see humans, they associate humans with food, because when the humans are there, they get to eat. Association shows that the fish remembers. So Goldfish don't have 3 second memories. That was made up so people wouldn't feel bad about keeping them in tiny bowls, they could say "every time it swims around the bowl, it sees it for the first time."
P.S.: Kayt, fish can't decide what to remember. There is no "common sense" to a fish, they remember anything that would be advantageous to their survival. And yes, they did bust it on Mythbusters...

I don't know the top end but it's at least a fortnight. I remember something on television about a maze the fish had to follow to get food. They learnt the maze in about 3 days The maze was then removed. Two weeks later they put it back and the fish went straight through.

In the previous question I mentioned an article in Aquarium Fish International, where a guy trained a goldfish to do tricks with treats. Fish have to have more than a three second memory to be able to do tricks. You can check out his site at fish-school.com.

FishyFishy is actual! Like people, fish have the two short and long term ideas. What gets stored in each of those relies upon totally on the action. Is it useful to the fish or grow to be it of no value? the vast majority of this pertains to the fish's maximum mandatory requirement - nutrition! Fish often bear in mind (for an prolonged time) whereabouts they get fed (spacial information), and who feeds them (facial attractiveness). short term memory? I reckon it may desire to probably be measured in milliseconds! Sorry... what grow to be the question back?

They have a site on line somewhere that teaches you to train your goldfish tricks. Try finding it. My goldfish always would feed from my hand. My oranda would actually swim up to my hand and let me pet him while his belly rested in my palm! I believe they have very good memory and are one of the brightest fish in aquarium life! # second memory is BS!

Its debatable- some people say 3 seconds, other 11. But basically fish can remember common sense things or something that is done repeatedly becomes a habit, if that makes sense...

goldfish have been proven to have a three month memory span and after that there memory is completely refreshed, this is why they know when it is food time and how people can put fish in mazes.
