I actually own a Harley-Davidson Sportster, but I am also a big fan of Crotch Rockets. To me, a bike is a bike; However, I feel the term "crotch rocket" makes the bike sound exactly as you described. When people ask me what kind of bike I have, when I tell them a Harley, to me it sounds "beefy" or "tough." Crotch Rocket sounds "wimpy" or "silly." And again, I love bikes of all makes and models, and this is just my opinion.

I have seen some sports bike riders actually believe the crotch rocket term as a badge of honor. But most people that use the term are not using it in a positive form.
When insuring my Big cruiser, my insurance agent goes, "That isn't one of those crotch rockets is it?" Trust me that wasn't a positive use, as they wouldn't have insured me if It was.

it first started when Kawasaki came out with the 3 cyl. 2 cycle 500 cc H-1 it was called the nickle rocket (for 500cc) because it was as quick on the strip as the 850s Norton's & 900 harleys then when they made the3 cyl 2 cycle 750 H- 2 it was even faster it was the first crotch rocket after that when honda & kawasaki came out with 4 cycle750 & 900s that were almost as quick the name was just applied to any fast jap bike. for some reason its never been used for european or american bikes.

It is used by people who (barely) recognise two types of bikes – cruiser and crotch rocket. They are motorcycles – not jets or rockets or any other phallocentric object you use to compensate.

I'm not too sensitive about what you call my bike. When people ask what kind of bike I ride, I tell them it's one of those bikes that looks like it's speeding while parked. I have a busa & a vulcan 1600. My insurance is more for the cruiser than the busa. Just remember, never speak badly of a man's bike or his kids.....in that order.

call em what you want...my friends and i ride everything. sport bikes, cruisers choppers, customs, ect. we call em crotch rockets, pocket rockets, or just plain old reliable. my son who is 8 already knows the difference between a bike that is always road worthy and those that are not. he refers to harley davidsons as oil squirters...a term he thought of all by him self...i am so proud....honestly it doest matter what you or who you ride, what matters is the fact that you ride. two wheels are cool...no matter what the make. keep the rubber side down, and your knees in the breeze.

I see it as a derogatory term. A Massachusetts state legislator recently coined them "bullet bikes". I find that equally as offensive.
They make it seem like it's something that just takes off on it's own out of control and you're just hanging on for the ride.

Squids and wannabe stunt monkeys ride crotch rockets.
REAL bikers ride sportbikes.
I suppose you could say the difference is that crotch rockets still have chicken strips.
