We have a grand piano - it is medium sized (so not really a grand - but not a baby). We want to move it from our formal lounge area into our family area. We know the legs have to be taken off but the piano must weigh so much - should we get a professional - have you ever tried? Our doors are wide - but probably not wide enough - and too scared to ruin our wooden floorboards.

There are "professional piano movers" who do an even better job than your average moving company. They have the correct equipment to do the job without damage to either the piano or the house.
Often the large & heavy instrument is lifted onto a cushioned cart with large rubber wheels to make the move easier on everyone. (Cost from one house to another is about $100)

IF you were to attempt it yourselves, these mover's carts can be found at a local equipment rental store.

Once in its new location, do remember to call the piano tuner to set it all right in tune again.

Well with enough man power the piano can be lifted. Measure the door first and see if it will fit thru, if it will than have the men folk pick it up and move it...or...I have this idea....ok put a big rug on the floor and if ur piano has rollers just roll it onto the rug to help protect the floor and roll the piano into the room of couse someone has to be pulling on the rug as the others are rolling it. or pick it up and sit it on the rug and the rug should slide if u have slick floors and push the piano to the other room. If your doors arent wide enough than be happy where your piano is sitting now!!

Call your local piano store and find out how much they'd charge to move your grand from one room to another. Chances are, it's very reasonable, and will save you time, stress, and possibly damage to your instrument!

I used to teach for my local store and I watched a lot of grands being moved; there's definitely a right way to do it!

If you don't want to spend the money and really want to do it yourself, at least call a piano mover for advice!

And, the previous poster is right, it will go out of tune. Whenever I've had a piano moved, I just schedule the tuning along with the move, and then my piano's ready to go!

Good luck!

From experience through the years, get a professional. Moving companies usually have competent people to do this for you.
