I'm a 17 year old high school student who is very much into making short films. I already know that film is the only thing for me career wise and even though it's a very hard industry to break into, I plan on trying my hardest. At home I have serious family issues and although I'm always in the top percentile when tested on the FCAT (Florida's mandatory version of the SAT, sort of, including math, science, reading, and writing), proving that I am in fact intelligent, I am not doing well in school with all the stress in my life right now. My mother and I fortunately are moving soon and the family issues will be over and in the past, but I'll be moving out of my school district my senior year, so my credits would be ruined and I'd end up having to repeat the eleventh grade, therefore, I have decided to get my GED. With all that said, my question is: How does a GED affect someone going to college for a film degree in film? Will it really even matter when I get out of college?

I am a professional filmmaker, living in the Los Angeles area, and I got my GED at the end of the eleventh grade. I took a couple of years of college cinema courses, but the best experience I had was as an apprentice in several post-production houses in Burbank.
Don't think for a second that a GED will hold you back. If you have the talent, the drive, and some helpful connections, you can get work as a filmmaker.
The movie industry is the only industry I know of where you can come out of film school with a Ph.D in film, and still have to start in the workplace as a Gofer (production assistant) whose main job is to get coffee and run errands on the set. People with no film school background have just as good a chance as the guys with a college degree when it comes to movie making, mostly because, no matter how talented you are, it still comes down to who you know.

If you'd like to see some of my short films (mostly commercials and industrials) check out my websites, below. I produced, directed, photographed, and edited all of the films you'll see there.

And good luck!
