Usually, incompatible RAM will cause the laptop not to even boot. It'll come up with an error or it'll just crash before it even really loads. Try running your system only on that stick of RAM and see what happens, then you'll know if it doesn't work at all.

Also, take it out: does it still crash?

yes, it will cause memory errors. If they are just different speeds though the laptop may just run memory at the slower speed. That should be a setting in BIOS for that , some systems time off the first memory slot, so that should be the slowest RAM .

Absolutly.
It can render your computer a Boat anchor.
You must have Good ram to expect your computer to work at optimum preformance.
I suggeat you look a Crucial.
You will run your self in circles with bargin basement or Cheap Ram.

yes..i had that experience b4. not knowing it, i when to reinstall winxp, but it doesn't allow me to reinstall. i took it back to HP and they verify that it was a incompatible ram.
