My parents, junior high, high school and college teachers have told me to try to become a published author. I have wanted it since I was 7. I am now 31 and cannot fathom someone actually publishing something that I produce. I want to think of it like a "real job" but amidst the hustle and bustle of life it has become something I merely enjoy in rare moments during the wee hours of the night. How can I become a more serious writer focused on becoming a published author?

You have to commit yourself to it every day. I have done so and now have something done and it is over 300 pages. I am also just in highschool. It has taken like 6 months to write it and now I am typing it. This has been the most exciting time I have ever had and I can't wait to see where it takes me. I hope if you really want to do it you get the opportunity. You just have to commit yourself to it everyday. Like me, I have no social life whatsoever. LOL sad but true.

I'm going to take it from you're screen name that you have three kids, which undoubtedly takes up a bit of your time. You probably also have a job (and how many adults today don't have a job) so that would make the suggestion of writing while the kids are in school null and void as you're probably working at the same time.

Depending on what you want to write may help you to accomplish what you're setting out to do. If you're kids are young enough that their asking you to read them a bedtime story, maybe you'll want to right now think about writing children's stories. Instead of always reading them a bedtime story, get yourself a tape recorder and tell them a story you makeup yourself. Record what you're saying, that way when you do have those rare moment you can write down what you recorded. And you can also use your own kids as a kind of gauge to determine how good the story might be.

If you're looking to write for adults, see if there's ways you can free up a little time on occassion. Maybe ask someone to babysit the kids onne night every two or three weeks (or however often you can) and use that time to do a little writing. Or else tell yourself that those rare moments you can find at night are your chance to get away from your job by becoming an author. Use them to work towards independence from where you work, that once you start getting published you'll be able to set your own working hours. And once you can start setting your own hours you can start finding more time to write in.

Focus on it. Don't even think about giving up. Commit to it. Have about 4 hours a day were you sit down and keep your creative juices flowing by writing. HIH!
