I have a friend on the cheerleading squad with me who has an easier time learning dances and cheers because she has dance experience. I think your experience will help you alot. When you try out be sure to SMILE! : ) Be full of spirit! Have great facial expressions that will grab the coach's attention! Also your gymnastic experience will be great when it comes to doing jumps such as a toe touch, herkie, pike, etc. Also you can be a great addition to the squad if you are able to tumble. Tumbling is important in cheerleading competitions. When you are practicing for tryouts try learning new cheers from the internet and making up some of your own. This will help!
You do not have to be a good dancer or gymnast to be a cheerleader. I have had little dance experience and I learn the dances and such pretty well. Also, i am not very good at tumbling but I still made the squad! : ) Thank goodness!
Cheerleading is fun! You will probably enjoy it! good luck with your tryouts!

Hi! I am a cheerleader so I might be able to help out. Cheerleading is a great sport. You get a really good workout and help build your muscles. You also meet a lot of friends. You sorta get rid of your shyness. I really would consider keep going with gymnastics. You can learn how to do your back handspring, back tuck, full split, and scorpion. Those things are really important in cheer. Not so much in Middle School, but in High School they mean a lot. Dance is not that much needed only for dance routines. You don't have to do both. You will just have to stretch a lot to get good flexability. Hope I helped!

it helps to have previos gymnastics/dance help usually, but u definately don't need it. i started cheerleading w/ no experience, and i improved a lot. Before the tryouts, if u have some time u could work on flexability, like splits, bridges, ect. and if u have a longer time before the tryouts u could take a gymnastics class or have some type of training.

Having a gymnastics background is very helpful. Now try focusing on cheerleading techniques such as these: http://geocities.com/aescougarcheer/basics.htm Get those nice clean motions and jumps taken care of now.

At tryouts be willing to try anything, smile, be spirited, and confident in yourself (or at least fake it if you aren't sure of yourself.) In other words, sell yourself as a cheerleader to the judges.

Good luck!
