My air conditioner can barely keep the house cool now. It will go down to 80 tonite. What do you think and how can I keep them looking nice and stay cool, preserve energy and so forth?

Not using your dryer would be a big help in keeping your house as cool as possible! A dryer adds a lot of heat and will drive up your electric bill as your AC has to work harder. Also, during a heat wave, we are usually asked to conserve electricity, so you're on the right track by wondering what you can do, since a dryer is one of the biggest consuming of all the household appliances.

You can hang the clothes out to dry, unless your heat is accompanied by humidity. If it is very humid where you are, the clothes will not dry properly and will probably smell like a wet dog even when they do eventually dry. If your climate is dry, using a clothesline is hands down the best option for you.

Another alternative is to do your laundry as late as night as possible, so that you are heating up the house during the coolest part of the day. Also, there is less demand for energy at night after all of the office buildings shut down, so you're helping both yourself and the community.

I hang mine most of the time in the summer to save money plus keeps the house some what cooler. I normally put fabric softner in them so they are so stiff when I take them down. Also if I ran out of softner I will put them in the dryer for about 4 minutes when I bring them in helps with the stiffness.
If you are trying to keep things cooler all the way around...don't use the oven cook on the grill outside.

i have been hanging my clothes outside too! it is way to hot to cook inside and even dry clothes. today i put a load out and it was so hot in pittsburgh that my clothes dried in 20 minutes. talk about saving energy!

like the others mentioned your clothes if you hang them outside will be hard as a rock when you bring them inside. try to use some gain with fabric softner or just add some downy to your rinse cycle to help with this problem.

what i do also is with the towels i dry outside (so they are not hard as a rock) i bring them inside and at night i put them on the no heat fluff cycle and throw in some dryer pads. this usually takes care of the starchy fabrics.

my mom hangs the laundry outside durin the summer. its really energy and cost effecient. go for it. and at nite, keep the windows open..its usually breezy. or u could get one of those window box air conditioners. they work wonders..haha. o and after ur clothes dry outside..spray them with a LITTLE bit of water...it'll get the stiffness out. but u only need a little. also, drink LOTS of cold water.

good luck and stay cool

Hanging clothes to dry is a great solution- it's worked for thousands of years before the invention of dryers! :)

Go to the laundromat? Take the wet clothes down there to dry?
