I was near a friend who was canning fresh veggies and she asked if I was on my period and if I was to stay away. Then I was looking at another garden and they asked the same question and I was wandering what happends if I touched something in the garden when I was on my period?

that's the craziest thing I have ever heard. I would have come back at them well if you haven't brushed you teeth today then you can't be around when canning either.......lol

Old myth. All kinds of things are supposedly ruined if a woman on her period gets near them or does them. Some religions have a whole list of things too.
No truth to any of it.

I have been hearing that for years also, but don't know if it is true or not. scientifically it does't sound reasonable.
