Congrats! I've been swimming for 4 years. I must say swimming is the BEST sport. It gets you fit year round. I love this sport. I started out in the "drowning squad" on my team. After about a year I was the top in my class. Now I own 6 records on my team and has Top 16 fastest times in USA in many events. So how to start? Lift weights? Run? Slack? No. Get in the water & swim! At first the best thing to do is get yourself the right equipment. Goggles, Cap( if u like to wear one, I don't), and FINs! Fin help you tremendously in your technique. If you do it right you would get into the flow of reducing drag and develop endurance. The key to swimming is to reduce drag, not so much getting stronger. 90% drag 10 % is strength. After a while ditch the fins and swim regularly.Once you get to swim with good technique, Have some one teach you Flip turns. Its pretty hard to explain so try to find a demonstration., but trust me its the Easiest way to get faster if u do it correctly and efficiently. Swim regularly too. I practice everyday, even on the weekends for 5000 yds. Once you develop good technique and endurance and flipturns, Time for starts. There are too types of starts, two foot grab start, or one foot track start. Grab starts look funky to most swimmers because they are slow if u don't do it well and they are bad for entrance int he water. the track start, place one foot on the edge of the block. then grab the edge of the block with ur hands, tuck u head down on push off!! fun. work on to get off fast, and streamlined. during races, don't breath before come off the dive, unless breaststroke. do ab workouts and push ups and squats to get stronger. good luck
