If that is indeed the case, and not simply a bias on your part, then it is probably a socio-cultural condition which gets passed down from one generation to the next.

The Amish are more simple, but in this case I'm referring to simplicity of life, not simple-mindedness.
If it's simplemindedness that you are referring to...well then...I would say many religions pride themselves on simplicity being virtue and instead lead their life with blinders on, looking at everything in terms of only black and white, making them complete simpletons.
I know some Christians, Jews, and Muslims that are that way. As well as some atheists also.
Rest assured, it's everywhere :)

my parents started going to a pentecostal church many years ago. they find happiness in it, but it's simply not for me. once i was told by the preacher that it is "against God's will to wear short-sleeved shirts" - seriously. suffice it to say that was my last visit. the pentecostal church is like all religions - hypocritical and self-righteous.

Simplicity is a virtue , is easy to be Happy when knowledge is devoid off. Have you ever meet a well educated Pent. ? I haven't .
