The swim bladder (the organ) is just a gas filled sac. When there's too much gas, then fish fish exhibits the symptoms you mention, but it can also underfill, which makes it hard to swim up off the bottom. As long as he can swim normally when he want, it wouldn't be a swim bladder problem.

The dulling of the color is either a sign of stress, or overproduction of slime coat, usually an indication of some type of parasite. A goldfish shouldn't lose its scales, unless it's been fighting with another fish, mating (there's a lot of rubbing against each other), or rubbing against objects in the pond to try and remove parasites. If the problem is a parasite, the fish will still be trying to rub against things in the tub. Did you happen to notice if the scale loss happened before or after you noticed the fry?

The other possibility is that this is a doitsu koi (mirror koi) which lacks scales at least along the sides of the body (see photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/photo_munki/539862138/ ) If this is the case, the fish will have noticeable barbels (whiskers) at the sides of the mouth.

Goldfish can live 20+ years (the record is over 40), so I doubt it's because of age!

circulate to the petstore, and have them do a water attempt. additionally, get a e book on goldfish, and examine up on the ailments section, and spot if it facilitates any. An egg-formed goldfish, resembling a fantail... Fleshy growths on the pinnacle? Are they only on the pinnacle? Are they the comparable coloration because of the fact the fish? Or if the fish is white, are they crimson? you won't have a fantail. If it has a fin, this is an oranda, and if it does not this is a lionhead, or ranchu. attempt taking the fish in to the save, and having a petshop worker inspect it. this could additionally help, if there are any issues.

Try this website - it is hands down the best diagnostic tool for goldfish that I have ever seen:

Based on what you have said, I would guess you have flukes. Check all your water parameters first, and make sure your water is good. Then, treat both the sick fish AND the rest of the pond with praziquantel (prazi) - if one fish has flukes, they all have flukes. The rest just aren't as sick yet. Prazi is available from all kinds of pond supply places - it's not cheap, but it IS good.

Hope this helps. Good luck!!

Sounds like Swim bladder to me, I would feed him shelled frozen peas. This acts as a laxative. And it usually helps the fish alot. I would feed him this for a few days and see if there are any new results on his swimming behavior.

usually if they are old, they will sit at the bottom. some ppl i know have 2 goldfish and they are about 4 years old and they sit on the bottom all the time. the color of his body could just be a sign of age. goldfish only live for a short amount of time, so 4 years and up is pretty old for them.
