Reading is a good way to improve your vocabulary. I recommend science or history magazines such as Discover, Smithsonian, Scientific American, National Geographic.

Also word see this website: "How to Improve Your Vocabulary" The Tip #4 about writing down unfamiliar words you encounter and then looking them up, is a particularly useful technique.

My SAT class used to The Princeton Review book "Word Smart" by Adam Robinson and The Staff of the Princeton Review. It has a list of common SAT words and Word Roots that are very helpful to know when taking the SAT. I highly recommend the book.

I dont know where you live but most local papers have crossword puzzles in them. start trying to work them. Go to a store like Walmart or Kmart find some books of crossword puzzles also get you a dictionary and thesaurus. You can get them in small paper backs to help you solve them. It will take a while to build your vocabulary but this method really works.
