In Indiana as a kid, I found a nice big furry ant. Picked it up and well, you know the rest of the story.
I suppose it could kill you if you are alergic to the venom, but so can milk if you are alergic to that.
Ive been stung by wasps and bees, bitten by spiders and other ants. All of them hurt, but I still remember how BADLY the velvet ant sting hurt. The stinger on this wasp is darn near its body length and penetrates pretty deeply. Being that the venom is injected deeply into the solf tissue - this may account for the seemingly increase in pain over other wasps.
It did, as it ended up, hurt the wasp more than me because I lived to be stung another day. . . . .

I can relate to young boy from Indiana that was stung as I too was curious about bugs as a very young child and my mind associated "furry & fuzzy" with safe and harmless. I was @ our lake house in OK AND maybe 4 or 5 when I spotted a beautiful velvet ant and wanted to pick it up as my Mother was burning some leaves-She warned me not to but you know a kid will always want to check things out for themselves and my mom was AFRAID OF EVERYTHING-Dogs, cats, bugs, water, etc. So in addition to a excruciating sting accompanied a severe whipping for disobedience as well-Please do NOT PICK THESE UP-Life Lesson SEARED into my soul-You got off easier than I did my friend from Indiana :-((((

Testing your pain threshold with a velvet ant is not a good idea. Never underestimate the ant. Although i have not had this chance, i think the pain should be as bad as ear piercing. i almost died.

No, I have not been stung by one and do not want to anymore than I would want to self immolate.

velvet ants are actully wingless wasps they have enough venom to kill cows if you get stung then your dead.
