A car can run on gasoline because it is flammable. Any flammable liquid (or dust even) can power a vehicle.

The fuel is ignited, causeing an explosion which forces a piston down. The piston is connected to a rod that spins a shaft. That rotational energy then goes to your transmission, through the axles and then the wheels.

Electricity, vegatable oil (aka biodiesel) hydrogen, compressed air, solar power are all options that can move a vehicle just as well. The problem is that none of them except veggie are cost effective yet.

Fuel cell technology to generate electricity directly from hydrogen. But the Hindenburg air ship so aptly demonstrated the danger Hydrogen gas. Before I quit my mechanic job I'm 52 years old. I bet we figure anti gravity out that's "my sign" to retire and go fishing. Like my forefathers shitching from ingnition points to electronic ingnition 1960's and in the 70's switching to fuel injection systems from carburators. Cars did not always have computers.
