Because when you see the number 8.99 you remember it as 8 and not 9. You think you are paying less.

Most places use the 99 cent amount to make you think you are paying less. Example, $1.99 vs. $2.00 at $1.99 you see the "1" and think you are only paying $1.00 but in reality you are paying almost $2.00. Wal-Mart tries even harder by listing things at 98 cents, 97 cents or even 96 cents. It is only a few pennys but sometime that makes the sale and overall it adds up to a lot of savings on your end and a lot more sales on their end because you usually end up buying more than what you wanted because you think you are getting a "great deal" so you spend the "extra" money on other stuff.

Marketing strategy. That is why Wal*Mart brings their prices down to .97 or .96 That way they can get away with saying the have the lowest prices. It is a lot easier to view the 2 digit number as being less than the three digit number. However, in the last while the Dollar stores have taken the $1.00 idea to a whole new level. I prefer honesty, don't you?

No clue, good question. I mean, is someone really going to dig out 99 cents from their wallet or pocket, I mean, most people would just give you a dollar. Then you get a penny back, yay?

because some people will say keep the penny. For instance if it is 99 cents and they pay a dollar they might say keep the penny. and after a while all those pennies add up.

Because they know how much I hate to have that extra penny every time, having to throw it in the center console of my car, building up for years and years. Now I have $234 in there and I have to roll it for the bank! WHY, WHY DO THEY TORTURE ME!

To make you think you're paying less.
Would you rather buy something for $1.00 or $0.99?

It makes it sound cheaper.

I agree with Creolegirl - it's a psychological thing to make customers think they are getting a bargain.
