On April 27, 2005, while seeking renewal of the broad powers granted law enforcement under the USA Patriot Act, Gonzales told the Senate Intelligence Committee, "There has not been one verified case of civil liberties abuse" from the law enacted after the 9/11 terror attacks.

Six days earlier, the FBI had sent Gonzales a copy of a report that said its agents had obtained personal information to which they were not entitled.

Several of the reported violations were referred to the President's Intelligence Oversight Board and copied to other officials. The heavily redacted documents, obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation under the Freedom of Information Act, include referrals to the board dating back to 2004. Several referrals were copied to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft.

One was sent to Gonzales, dated April 21, 2005 — less than a week before he testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Did he read it and lie to congress about it? Or is he simply incompetent?

An Attorney General that is ethical ? LMAO Oh no. That's just asking way too much for an Attorney General under George Bush. It's not only asking too much, but it's downright undesirable to Bush.

Of course the man lied. Unless he has serious memory issues he lied through his teeth. How is it possible to not remember several meetings where such important things were discussed? He definitely needs to step down, he wasn't even a good attorney general. In all actuality he as a down right awful attorney general. He has done next to nothing ever since his appointment. Many people would send him requests and letters and he wouldn't even send a reply back, he didn't even say no. He did nothing. He really needs to go.

Do bears crap in the woods? Do fat dogs fart? Of course he lied! Gonzo is just another Bush lackey. They all are crooked and corrupt. The whole batch needs to be thrown out NOW. If the Dems don’t start real investigations and impeachment, the people will march to the gates of the White House and demand change.

He lied about it in my opinion. I don't think it takes a lot of scrutiny to conclude that. He is incompetent as a human being for allowing himself to be manipulated by Bush. The fact that his Fuhrer has stepped in to prohibit the testimonies of aides shows that there are a great many mysteries that may very well never be solved but that there are these mysteries should validate voters concerns.

I have to stick up for Gonzo. During the time he was here on YA I realized he was brain dead from spending 25 years with Bush.

I don't know if he can be cured But hopefully He can get treatment in 2009

Of course he lied. I don't know which is more scary, his lying, incompetence, or the fact that bush thinks he is the greatest thing since since sliced bread.

Lets all jump on the "I hate Bush" bandwagon. It is headed straight to crazy town. Just ask Sheahan.

You left out one part of the story:

"The statements from the attorney general are consistent with statements from other officials at the FBI and the department," Roehrkasse said. He added that many of the violations the FBI disclosed were not legal violations and instead involved procedural safeguards or even typographical errors.

He did not lie. The FBI even say they are not legal violations.

You are sheep. You accuse the con's of being followers, look at the answeres given they are all repeated from your leaders; the media. I wish the libs weren't completely ignorant.

He lied, they all lied. Why couldn't America see Bush for what he really is. Something still smells in Florida, namely Jeb Bush and family.
