what if the medicine we take doesnt really help but everything is a state of mind? see, my friend told me that he believed sickness was a state of mind, and he hasnt been sick ince he was 12(he's 30) What proof do we have that a microscope really sees cells and not something else?what proof do we have that DNA is what makes an individual, and is not something else? What proof do we have that a mirror reflects a persons' imgae? How do we know that the pics Voyagers 1&2 send us are not just false images or technological mishaps? How do we know that a telescope shows us stars, and isnt just something of a kaleidoscope? How can we be sure that trees and plants don't have some form of communication? That there isnt some underground race that has advanced technology beyond ours, or that even cloaks their discovery with this technology? What proof do we have of the make-up of planets, comets and such things? What if there is no sensible explanation for anything, but we just have it like it is

Arthur N, u said they are physical laws of the universe that we cannot see. how can we be sure they are there or they work when we cannot see or feel them?

I thought science was a way of observing the world around us, as we make news discoveries, the paradigms of reality will change, ie, science is flexible and is always searching to prove new realities. So where does the idea that science is wrong come into play.
Another way of saying this is that the science of medieval ages is not the same science as today, nor will the science of the future look like the science of today. It's always changing as new observations and theories are discovered.

Science is based on physical laws of the universe. You asked about a microscope, how can we be sure that it see cells and not something else?
The answer is that when light is shone throught a cell the material that the cell is made out of will distort the light, the same as when light is shone through a glass of water. The light can then be focused so that a small amount of the total image is passed to the eye, the same as a magifing glass does but on a larger scale (higher power), which will then allow the cells to be seen if they disport the light enough. When they do not a stain, that same (literally) as you would use on your clothes, is used to colour the cells.
This is just one example of how science is based on the physical laws of the unverse, we cannot see them in opperation but they are there. For example Gravity, we cannot see it so the question can be asked 'why do we stay on the ground'? The more complex the science the deeper the answer lies, but the same is always true, there is a real world reason why these thing work the way that they do.
An as for your friend, he either has a very good constitution, a very weak memory or just has not been around enough people to have gotten an illness.
Hope this helps.

If you think back to a time when no one even knew what a virus was, how did they all get sick if it was just a state of mind? Especially in the times when there was no medicine or preservatives in the food or pollution in the water.
Why did plagues wipe out huge amounts of people, a mass hallucination maybe?
And they can prove DNA actually does things by altering it and showing the result in lab tests. They use genetic alteration on everything from the beef in your grocery store to the plants in the flower shop.
All the space crap, I could care less about unless somethings going to smash into us. I think they should use the money to house and feed people that are out there starving.
As for your friend, he's very lucky. Most of us can't imagine or will away being born with deformities or illnesses like leukemia. Saying "its a state of mind' follows into the false conception that people who get sick 'deserve it' somehow. If you want to test your theory take a quart of milk outside in the summer and leave it for a day and then chug it. Its all a state of mind!
Some of the things you mention are somewhat far fetched. "How do we know the mirror reflects a person's image?" If you can't figure that out...then I don't know what to say.
It great that you can make all these flights of fancy, but what use are they? Can you do anything with any of your theories? Can anything you've just supposed be applied to anything?
Can you improve a single thing? Doctors can use a microscope to find something dangerous in your blood and save you from it, so I don't really mind if they are a work in progress or could be called something else.
That might be why we don't explore any of the things you mentioned. Because some of us have to work hard instead of trying to figure out if there are still unicorns out there.

When you find the ultimate truth of life you will know the answers to all of your questions. You will have Knowingness.
There are a few books you really do need to pick up and that will start you on the path to your own truth.
Spiritual Enlightenment, the Damnedest Thing by Jed McKenna, or The Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle, or I AM That by Nisargadata. They are listed in order of easy read. The first one is right up your alley.
Imagine having all of your questions that you just asked and more, answered. These books will get you started in finding the answers yourself. Only your own personal experience can lead you to the all knowing answers.
And an aside: All things have consciousness. Even in death, when the human physiology is non functional, there are still cells at work that are alive and conscious in breaking down the structure of the discarded body. From life to life. But that is just an aside.
You have brilliant questions and these books will help you to find the simple truth and answers without believing anything. No religion interference, no sect to join, nada. Just read and enjoy. Something will come to you. I promise.

haha well yea. you started questioning because your friend hasnt gotten sick in a while. well heres the answer to that question. when you feel depressed or if something is bothering you, your body can make you feel physically ill. right now im sick to my stomach because i was a jerk to my Friend tonite. its also his motivation. i bet he gets all of his work done quickly and completely, wakes up early in the morning, and is always energetic. i admire your friend. combine that with a strong immune system and is why he probably hasnt been sick .
as to your other questions. you just dont know. look at the old times, first they thought the world was flat, then round, then that it wasnt the center of the universe, then the sun wasnt the center of the universe, and so on and so forth. the same goes for the most of the rest of science and medicine. as time goes on, we will have clearer and more tangible evidence.

Some of those things you could observe for yourself. Scientists test their hypotheses repetitively and encourage other scientists to do the same. You would be completely amazed by how astronomers find out the information they have now. They have very advanced and clever ways of finding out information on celestial objects. Although they can't touch it, they know the temperature and composition of them based on their colour. They know whether something's revolving around it or not based on the Doppler Shift.
If science was wrong on something, they would be the first to admit it. Scientists are not motivated to just create gullibility around the world (there's already enough of that); they're here to forward our technology, obtain knowledge, and show proof of their findings so that others may learn from them.

The scientific method requires repetition of the experiment by others that get the same result and that a prediction can be made and then verified. Further, that the verification is reproducible by others. Nothing is considered scientific fact until these conditions are met. All the steps required to accomplish the scientific method may be found at www.scintificmethod.com.
BTW the way, your friend may either have a robust immune system or a convenient memory.

You can't say that medicine is all fake. People get cancerous tumors and there is no way that you can make yourself believe the tumor is there...it just is. Without getting it removed or getting chemo, you can't get better. I would like to believe that I won't get cancer although it runs in my family...how would you explain that? There is too many links in technology and society for everything to be completely wrong although I won't argue that some things are probably completely wrong. Society likes to believe that everything we've discovered is true but let's face it: we're human and we make mistakes.

Seriously, people use to believe that the earth was flat and now we think upon that as being stupid. What if our theory on atoms was looked upon humans from the future? I bet they would be laughing at us. If the scientific world and thinking fell then many people would be lost and confused. I take things as I see them. When I put my hand against my desk I know that my hand won't go through it, I don't care that it has to do with the atomic structure!

science isnt all about being right. it is about a method for documenting discovery, so that we can learn from it. if it turns out the first batch of answers were wrong because our observations werent complete enough then we try again.
It is not about being so pompous and arrogant that we think we have all the answers. its about being humble enough to keep asking the right questions
